Hey, folks...

So, I get up this morning to walk to get melting salt and on my way I hear an eery-bone-crackin' noise and then low and behold...

BAM! This massive tree branch breaks and falls because of the amount of ice on top of it.

The weather is pretty bad where I'm located. Our mayor issued a "Level 3" status which means that if you are caught driving on the street you will be issued a ticket and possibly arrested if your reason isn't good enough. The mayor also declared today "Family Day" and encouraged the people of the city to use this day as a day to reconnect, chill, and maybe even have a snow ball fight with your loved ones. I thought that was cool...

Since I don't have kids or roommates to throw snowballs at, I will use this time (I have been working from home) to:

invite myself to slow down

reconnect with Oprah

allow myself to fall asleep when I want to

clean

read

stare and think

But this will all happen after I get out here on my porch, steps, and sidewalk and shovel all of the snow and ice that has accumulated. I caught myself laughing this morning because this amount of snow makes some folks mad. But it makes me laugh because I know that this kind of weather makes us slow down. I am truly thankful for this opportunity to slow down, rest, and appreciate the beauty that is winter.

Hey, folks! Happy New Year and all that good stuff!
Yeah…who knew I would disappear for a year? I sure didn’t, but I’m gonna jump back into the blogging game and act like I just posted last week. I missed you all for the record….

Well, 2009 has started off ok crafting wise. I feel like I am on track with some of my creative goals. Before the conclusion of 2008, one of my goals was to learn how to sew and around mid-November a friend of mine told me her mother would be happy to get me started. She didn’t have to tell me twice….

Meet “Dith”. My fabric/yarn/scrapbooker partner-in-crime.

"Dith" and her mother (Thanks, BJ!!) have been very instrumental in getting me familiar with my sewing machine and understanding patterns. It has been a little intimidating, but I am sticking with it.

As I embark on this journey of sewing, please keep me in your thoughts. Although I am so eager to learn this skill, I am SO NERVOUS! Any tips for this novice seamtress? Drop me some lines of wisdom PUH-LEASE!!

As always, stay tuned! I have a quilting class this week and I hope you stop by next week to see what happened. Cross your fingers!

Yes, folks! I am back. I am somewhat back into the swing of things.

Let me tell you what's been going on in Kellz world....

Well.....

I de-cluttered.

Moved.

Got a new job.

Yeah. My bad for leavin' ya'll hanging for a while. Like I said before, life came like a whirlwind and I had to respond to all the changes. And I did. Barely....

During that time, folks did keep in touch. I want to say "thanks" to all who dropped me an email and inquired about my presence in the blogging world. Thank you to:

As you can see, I received gifts! "Stitchmistress" sent me a lovely pillow she made to go with my home decor. She also included a leftover skein from the project. Thanks, again, Stitchmistress!
Then, I won a contest sponsored by the talented Ms. Carla. I won a "sweater bag". Thanks again, Ms. Carla. Folks can't keep their hands off of my stuff.....

In other news....

I have been crafty in the midst of the whirlwind. I've been making "Paper Boxes". Right now, I am doing some samples for my holiday gifts. This year I want all of my giftboxes to be handmade and to look the same. I have been getting some cool tips and techniques from my recent subscription of "Blueprint" Magazine. They provide alot of ways to embellish boxes and paper in order to make the perfect gift. Pick up a copy!

Seems like a can't get away from making Turtleneck Shrugs. I think it's because I am on a quest to find the right yarn that is not itchy and scratchy, while holding up its form. I am knitting it with elann.com's Super Cable Aran yarn. It's cool, but I don't think it's what I'm striving for style-wise. Do you have any yarn suggestions for Teva Durham's "Turtleneck Shrug"?

Things have also changed aroung here in "Kelly's Kronicles". Instead of greeting you with "Words of the Week" and "Song of the Week", I will end each post with them. So, have a good week and I'll catch up with you sometime between now and my next post. So, be on the look out!

HAPPY NEW YEAR, folks! I hope everyone is starting the new year off on a good foot. Me? Well, as always, I am living one day at a time, but the year is starting off okay. I can't and won't complain. I will embrace this year with open arms.

FIBER ARTS

I think I will be taking a page from my fellow fiber enthusiast, Holly, when she says that she will only teach others how to knit and/or crochet instead of making them something. I would agree with her when she says that one is alienated from their crafting when people commission you for an item and they don't pay you or decide against getting the itme from you. In my case, I have been bombarded with folks asking me to make them things. As a result, I don't have the excitement I usually have when I am just either trying out a new stitch or just making something for someone because I WANT to and I have the time and dedication. I don't want to be alienated from my sweet hobbies. They bring me joy.

So, I put my words into action and taught my first student in a long time. Meet my friend Leo:

Here she is tackling a garter-stitch scarf that will be made for a teaddy bear. Leo is a fast learner and got down the rhythm of knitting really quick. This should be a HOT scarf when it's completed. Keep at it, Leo and good job!

I am also a new member of The Weaver's Guild in my hometown. A couple of weekends ago, we had ROC DAY. Traditionally, ROC Day is the day spinners return to work after the twelve days of Christmas. Roc Day is also known as St. Distaff's Day, although there is no Saint Distaff. For our ROC Day, we hosted a series of workshops that ranged from introductory spinning to making paper boxes with earrings in them. I chose "Conquering Cables" and "Earrings in a Paper Box". Below you will find my friend, fiber enthusiast, and instructor, Holly. She taught me and others how to make paper boxes with earrings. I already knew how to make earrings, but learning how to make paper boxes was exhilarating!

As you can see, I could not stop making the "earrings in a box". I went crazy!

And we all had a good time!! The Weaver's Guild ROCKS!!

Hey, folks! It is surely that time of year where I just want to dig into things that I have been putting off. I don't mean to. You know, things come up. So, I'm diggin' in:

FIBER ARTS
Yes, I am still working on DramaQueen's Turtleneck Shrug, but I am almost done. I just have to finish the turtleneck portion of it. This weekend I had the chance to to take a trip to Indianapolis for good food and good times and you know I cannot go anywhere without checking out local yarn stores. How about I came upon a knitter's paradise called Mass Ave. Knit Shop. This place has EVERYTHING and one of the best sales I have come up on in a while. Look at what I got:

Above you will see the sale items I purchased. I got 3 balls of ROWAN's CashSoft Aran for $4 and 2 hanks of Berroco's Ultra Alpaca yarn for $8.50. Um, are you drooling? I know, I know....

The Ultra Alpaca will be for the this project and I will definitely find something to do with the CashSoft Aran. It just feels so good. Now all I need are the 2 sets of size 8 29" circular needles to begin. How could I forget those? See, it can be all about the yarn sometimes with me. I need help! hahahah... (Note to self: Start posting pics of you using the yarn. How about that, Kellz?)

FOOD AND FELLOWSHIP

Some time ago, I had the great experience of doing 2 years of service with AmeriCorps. As a result of this experience, I learned a wealth of knowledge about collobaration, diversity issues, and how to encourage communities to use their assets. For me, however, I also came away with knowing some of the coolest and brightest people I know. This past Sunday we came together to just eat and fellowship. It's that simple for me: time, food, and conversation.

OH, SWEATERS! How I love how they can be transformed into intricate garments. Below are 2 HOT sweaters I would love to make.

The thing is... I need a tutorial on constructing knitted garments. As some of you know, I have never made a sweater. But I know that I can do it. If you know of any books out there that give good instruction on how to make your own personalized sweaters from start to finish, please let me know. I want to know about the construction of various cowls, shawls, sleeves, etc.

I am so ready and eager to learn.

Hey, peeps! I hope all is well with everyone. Well, I guess it's offically over. SUMMER!! Where did it go?!! For me, it may have came and went, but that doesn't mean the fun won't stop. In the words of P. Diddy: Can't stop and it won't stop! Let's get to it.....

MUSIC/CONCERTS

Have you ever seen her in concert?

If you have not, you NEED to. It's like one of those experiences you have to have before you die. Atleast that is what I feel when I see Ms. Badu in concert. I swear she puts some type of magic on her audience because we surely get under her spells.

Like I said, the fun doesn't stop and can't stop in Kellz' world: A couple of weekends ago, some friends and I took a trip up the road to a jazz and blues fest where Goapele and Erykah Badu were slated to perform. At first, I didn't believe they were going to be in my area because of the price of tickets (donation only, I gave $10) and how low-key it was. This concert was definitely on the down-low and by word of mouth. Let's just say, I am glad I was at the right place at the right time. When it comes to concerts, keep your ears open! You just never know who may be near you!

As I am attempting to finish DramaQueen's Turtleneck Shrug, I casted on this soon -to- be scarf:

I put this scarf on circular needles because I want the scarf to have that "thick" feeling. The yarn is unbelievably soft, but it also has that shed quality. So, I will see if this will be a good project to start. I'm not sure if I'm feeling it yet. I'll see......stay tuned.

Yes, folks!! I am feeling the heat! It is hot here in my part of the world. It's kinda hard to do anything 'cause I just want to catch a nice breeze or just chill out. But with anything else that may hold me back from doing anything, I must press on. So let's get to it........

As you can see, I am so behind in finishing DramaQueen's Turtleneck Shrug. However, I continue to work on it every chance I get: Standing at the bus stop. On the bus. At parties. Before I go to bed. When I am chilling with family......just whenever time permits me to put these hands to work. I am on the 2nd sleeve anxiously waiting to connect the two so I can see this baby come together. I must say it's looking real good. I wish I could try it on, but this is for the lovely DramaQueen. Yo, DramaQueen, when you get this, I want pictures!!

A Summer of Sweet and Thoughtful Exchanges Let's just say I was spoiled this summer. I participated in Secret Pal 8 and The Secret Sistah Pal Exchanges and I must say these rounds were the best yet!

Why the lapse in posting, Kellz? Well, folks....besides travelling and not having a digital camera, I discovered the reason I was not able to upload pics to my blog: I had 2 messenger programs on my computer that interferred with me uploading pics. So, I had to delete them and whadda' ya' know....now I can post pics when my homie, Millz, lends me her digital camera. I don't like to post without some sort of visual, ya' know? I am saving up to purchase a HOT digital camera...STAY TUNED!

IT'S A CELEBRATION!!

Hey folks....
Sorry again for the lapse in posting, but I am celebrating! Yeah, that's right! It's officially the month of August and for me that means celebrating. Celebrating what you ask? Well, if you know any Leos, you know that we like to do it big. So, I make it a point to celebrate my birthday the whole month of August. So, I will be away for awhile as I do the following:

Head to New York City August 5th-12th to visit DramaQueen and YARN4MORE and hit up some of my favorite stores and HOT house parties. (Hit me up on email if you want to hook up for some yarn shopping or know of any HOT parties that I need to attend.)
Plan my day off on my birthday----> AUGUST 21!!!
Plan another trip before I get back to the grind....

Oh yes, folks. I am trying to answer the call of being a better blogger. Again, life got the best of me . For those that were inquiring about me, I am fine. You know, sometimes you gotta' take care of business. But, I am back and with some treats to share, so let's get to it!!

FIBER ARTS
Ok, so a couple of friends and I took a trip to the Alexandria, VA/D.C. area during Memorial Day weekend and you know I had to hit up a yarn store. I ended up at Stitch DC in the Chevy Chase area and picked up these goodies.
I present to you "Blue Sky" Cotton Yarn. This will be a "Turtleneck Shrug" for the lovely DramaQueen.

Here is my progress thus far. This will be my 4th "Turtleneck Shrug" that I will be making for a friend.

This yarn feels great and it better for the price (haha!). So, DramaQueen, I hope you like your shrug. It should be completed by your birthdate.

TO CINNAMON PURLS

Hey, lady!! Just wanted to give a public apology for not getting with you in a timely manner and a SUPER THANKS for my knitted gifts. They did arrive safely. I will be posting a picture soon. SP8 Questionnaire

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
My favorite yarns to knit/crochet with are yarns that feel good when you wear ‘em. I love alpaca and soft wools. (To get a better sense of what I like, please see Question #21.) So, Secret Pal, if you know about some yarn that causes you to never want to take off a garment, please introduce me. Now….fibers/yarns that I absolutely do not like are fur-like yarns, boucle, “shiny” yarn, and yarns that resemble/feel like suede or chenille.

2. What do you use to store your needles/hooks in?
For my crochet hooks, I use a Boye needle case and for my knitting needles I use…hmmm…let’s just say I store them. I don’t have a case for my knitting needles.

3. How long have you been knitting? Would you consider your skill level to be beginner, intermediate or advanced?
I was introduced to knitting in the 7th grade and played with it off and on thru the years. I have been crocheting for about 6 years now. I would consider myself at an intermediate skill level.

4. Do you have an Amazon or other online wish list?
No, but please see Question #21.

5. What's your favorite scent? (for candles, bath products etc.)
Candles and bath products: “Sweet Nothings” or “Angel Whispers” by Glade candles and Eucalyptus Spearmint products from Bath and Body Works. Very relaxing scent. I also like the “ Fresh Vanilla” and “Brown Sugar and Fig” scent from Bath and Body Works. This is kind of hard for me ‘cause I just don’t like one particular scent. I have to smell it to assess if this is something I like or not. Weird…I know. I am open to new scents. If you’d like, expose me to new things, Secret Pal!

6. Do you have a sweet tooth? Favorite candy?
Yes. My favorite candy: Reese Cups

7. What other crafts or Do-It-Yourself things do you like to do? Do you spin?
I like/do photography, archiving (scrapbooking), making jewelry, sewing (if I can ever get to it), the art of hosting and entertaining, and just learning about anything that interests me. No, I do not spin. I think I would like to see this being done instead of me doing it.

8. What kind of music do you like? Can your computer/stereo play MP3s? (if your buddy wants to make you a CD)
If you haven’t heard, I am an unofficial musicologist. I like anything that sounds good to me, but I love reggae (old-school dub, rock-steady, etc.), hip-hop, r&b, classical, new age, neo-soul, old school jazz, and some house music.

9. What's your favorite color? Or--do you have a color family/season/palette you prefer? Any colors you just can't stand?
I like hues of blue, green, grays, black, and pink. I love earth tones, as well.

10. What is your family situation? Do you have any pets?
I have no kids. Just a single woman trying to live life to the fullest! I do not have any pets (I can barely take care of myself!!! Just jokin’…)

11. Do you wear scarves, hats, mittens or ponchos?
I am addicted to scarves and I wear mittens, but no hats or ponchos. I love ‘em, but those tend to look good on other people, but not me.

12. What is/are your favorite item/s to knit?
Bags, scarves, and eventually my own style of sweaters.

13. What are you knitting right now?
I am about to start 2 “Turtleneck Shrugs” for friends.

14. Do you like to receive handmade gifts?
Yes, I do.

I don’t have a preference. Whatever gets the project done!!

No, but this is a BIG goal of mine. I really want to get one of these. I NEED one. I think I would be satisfied with the yarn winder. I don’t think I would need a swift.

Myself, aunt, and private lessons in NYC.

I don’t have any.

Hey, folks!! I'm back and ready to get back into the groove of things. As you see in the title of this post, I am yearning. Hopefully by reading this post you'll be able to point out what I mean. Let's get to it!!

FIBER ARTS
In some previous posts, I have mentioned that I belong to a HOT group of knitters and crocheters that reside in Ohio and NYC. Well, below you will see our fierce crocheter, Millz, modeling our new bag. We are called "YARN4MORE". Do you "Yarn 4 More"?

I also know that if I don't get something on my needles soon I AM GOING TO BUST!! I. NEED. TO. KNIT!!!! I haven't purchased any yarn due to my commitment of buying yarn with purpose. Before I choose a winner for my contest, I have to complete 2 projects that I have promised 2 people. So, I will be ordering some Patons DECOR so that I may fulfill my promise to 2 special DIVAS. It's coming....

Research While I am still on the hunt for artwork focusing on women of color in needlearts, this will be my last showcasing of my research. If I come across a piece that is new, I will be sure to post it. It has been a pleasure seeking these pictures. I wish there were more. Research I have been continuing my research dealing with images of women of color engaging in the world of fiber arts. I have realized that there isn't much artwork per se, but mainly pictures. Sometimes I wish I could draw or paint. I would have this covered.

I also have been thinking about just crafting communities as a whole. Why is it that crafters don't come together more? I hear a lot of talk about people refraining from crafting in groups because of a lot of reasons, but I tend to think that people get together for support, inspiration, feedback, and fellowship. Don't get me wrong, it's not that we have to or should. I guess I just have a thing for "community" in general. I've had my share of crafting groups coming together and then dissipating, but I don't let it get me down. Oh, well....

FIBER ARTS NEWS

This weekend felt good. Why, you ask? Well, I purged! That's right. I finally de-stashed my crafting room/office of materials I am not putting to use. I just couldn't stand to look at it any more. I guess this is something that one tends to learn when you progress in your crafting. Well, I'm glad I learned sooner than later. Could this be one of the characteristics of becoming a yarn snob? Hmmm.....
I have located a knitting circle in my area that will gladly accept any yarn that I have and I also will be sending some yarn down to a HOT crafter in Atlanta that is in love with crocheting. So, atleast these materials will be put to use.
Continuous memo to self: Make it useful, Kellz, make it useful.

So, what else has been making me feel good these days? Research. Yes, research on women of color who are into hand crafts. I am really into this subject about women and the communities that they create . It gives me great joy when I read about women who do crafts, particuarly knitting and crocheting. The notion of collaboration, sharing, and community inspires and excites me. For example, check out Sistahcraft's latest post about the latest fiber arts event in NYC. You go, Sahara!!

I also have been trying to locate artwork with Black women engaging in the hand crafts. Not much out there, but I did come across this painting. Cool, uh?

MUSIC/MOVIE NEWS

Wow!! Two of my favorites combined in one medium. Music and film!! Yesterday, I finally went to to go see the film version of what I went to last week (See post 3/5/06) . Let just say I am glad I went to the last showing and no one was really in the theater because who thought they at the concert in Brooklyn! This is an event I should have attended. The performance I enjoyed most was Jill Scott and The Roots' performance of "You Got Me". For all you Roots' fans, you know that this was the version also on MTV's $2Bill concert series at the 9:30 club in Washington, D.C. This is a great mesh of rap and rock. Gave me goose bumps! I also enjoyed The Fugee's return and Cody Chestnutt's song that ended the film. I hope there will be a soundtrack to this film. I already need it. I guess Chappelle didn't know that there is someone right down the street from him that LIVES and BREATHES for concerts. Overall, I appreciated this documentation of music and film. This was really a great idea. I hope to be able to pull something like that off one day....we'll see.
